1984 by George Orwell is a dystopian novel that follows a man named Winston. The bookśbook's main focus is on the government, and how it controls every aspect of a civilianś lifecivilians' lives. George Orwell wrote this book in the 1940s, just after World War II ended. His purpose for writing 1984 iswas to warn the readers about what dangers could lie in the near future involving the government and society. A few of these dangers are an overpowering government, manipulation of information and media, and totalitarianism.
The government is overpowering and controlling. Its main goal
wasis to maintain power over every person's thoughts and emotions. They monitor everything and put telescreens in civilianścivilians' homes. The telescreens eliminate any source of privacy, as they pick up every sound and movement a person makes. It can never be turned off. In public settings, cameras are placed everywhere. Even though in the real world we do not have telescreens, there are surveillance monitors and cameras in public places such as stores and parks. On phones, controls such as Siri and Alexa are always listening for the phone ownerśowner's voice to pursue a command. Orwell iswas warning the readers of the reality of citizen monitoring and misinformation.
