Utilitarianism, a consequentialistconsequential ethical theory, is accepting of same-sex marriage. Jeremy Bentham’s theory proposes that an actionsaction's consequences is what determines what is morally wrong or right, and focuses on doingaccomplishing the greatest good for the greatest amount of individuals, (Wilkens, 2011). Same-sex marriages bring a greaterconsiderable amount of benefits then displeasuresfor an individual rather than displeasure. In an article it states, “being able to lead whatever type of lifestyle you find most comfortable, (whether it be in a heterosexual, homosexual, asexual, or otherwise relationship), allows for a community to remain diverse and keep rigorous debate up which may lead to a better understanding of the truth or relationships which can lead to greater happiness of the society", (Ashlee, 2016, para. 1). The article is stating that by allowing homosexual couples to marry, we create a greaterconsiderable happiness tofor not only the individuals, but to the community as well. This is because accepting allows individualsit allows for the acceptance as well as for communities to come to a greater understanding of different individuals' relationships. Some people argue that same-sex marriage will make the heterosexual couples unhappy, when in reality it is not harming their relationshiprelationships in any way, for it is not preventing themthey themselves from being able to marry each other. AlsoIn addition, many argue about the consequence that gay marriage brings is thattake away from the main purpose of marriage which is to procreate, and same-sex parents aren’t able to do that, (Langrell, 2015). Even though they can’t have children, many individuals can adopt, which is also the case with heterosexual couples. ThereFor there are many children who do not have a home, and it would bring the greatestmost significant level of happiness to them tothese children if they could be taken into a loving home. Therefore, the overall results of a gay marriage are of significant goodnot as negative as people think, and overrule the badcontrary factors, making it morally right for them to join in matrimony.
