Materials and Methods
The materials used in this experiment were 3three de -shelled eggs, a cell phone for the timer, a glass dish to place the eggs in, a pencil to write down the results, a spoon , four large weighing boats , paper towel, gloves and, a balance scale to weigh the de -shelled eggs and three solutions of 0% glucose, 14% glucose and 40% glucose. One the day of the lab, we labeled 4 jars with a sSharpie marker, one wasfor the 0%, one for the 14% and one for the 40% of glucose solution. The first steps were to set- up the lab area and make sure all the materials we needed wasere there. After setting up the lab area and gathering all the materials we needed to conduct the lab experiment, we labeled the 4four large weighing boats with a sSharpie marker. The next step was to zero out the weighing scale. The solution was poured into the correctly labeled bowl for each egg. Once we had poured the solution into the bowl, we placed the egg in the correctly labelinged bowl of solution. A weighing bowlat was placed in front of each bowl of solution. Once, we placed the eggs in the bowl of solutiond we set the timer for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes, a spoon was used to remove the egg from the solution in the bowl. Next, we placed the eggs on the weighing boats. Once all three eggs wasere removed from the solution, we zeroed the scale and placed one egg at a time on the scale for weighing . After weighing all three of the eggs, we placed the eggsm back in the solution and set the timer for another 15 more minutes. While waiting fonr the timer to end, we then used a paper towel to wipe off any excess water from the weighing boats. The second step iwas to replaveut the egg back in the dish for the next interval s--30, 45, and 60 minutes. After the experiment iwas completed, we then returned the eggs to their proper container and we cleaned up our area according to the laboratory policy.
Results:
Table II below shows the total weight of all three eggs. The first egg weighted 0 grams at 0 minutes. Once egg 1 was placed in the so 0%lution of 0% sucrose atfor 15 minutes, ithe egg slowly started to increase in size. After 60 minutes of soaking in the concentration solution then, the egg became hypotonic (swelled). After egg 2 was placed ing thegg 2 solution of 14 % of sucrose, the recording of the egg stayed the same. Table I will show yous how egg 2 stayed the same (isotonic) for several minutes. After 60 minutes, the eggs decreased in size just a little. The table will show yous the decreeas of the in total weighingt. Egg 3 weighed 84 grams inat 0 minutes, and once egg 3it was placed in tohe 40% sucrose solution, ithe egg started to become hypertonic (shrink). Table I shows the total weights of all three eggs and Table II shows the weight change. To identify each egg on graph II, iI have labeled egg 1 asin blue, egg 2 asin red and egg 3 asin green. On the graph below, egg 1 that is, respresented in blue, shows an increase in weight. Egg 2 that is, respresented in red, showeds no change in weight. Egg 3 that is, respresented by in green, shows a decrease in weight.
