During the 1920s in Russia, the close-ups were put to yet another use. Russian directors believed that close-ups could be used to create mental associations. For example, to convey the idea that a person was giving a long-winded, boring speech, the director mightwould, perhaps as the case may be, present a close-up of a person talking, and followed by an image of a cow mooing.
