As mentioned before, the Gothic novel was developed mainly in the English -language literature. Horace Walpole, the 4th Earl of Oxford (1717-1797), was the founder of the genre of horror novels and mysteries - the "Gothic novel". In 1764 anonymously was published , The Castle of Otranto -, the first Gothic novel, whas publicshed anonymously. It takes place in the era of the First Crusade. There are all sorts of elements of horror in this novel: a falling helmet from the sky that killings the Prince, the statue of the ancestor of one of the characters suddenly beginsning to bleed, the vision of giant hands, etc.
