Although Rome’s expansion brought it power and wealth, it also caused some problems. Emperors were under huge pressure to win battles and accommodate every citizen's' needs. Those who failed to do so were assassinated. Because Rome’s soldiers were rewarded with land for successful military campaigns, the Empire kept expanding and was in need of more soldiers to defend more land. Because the amount of land was limited, there were fewer recruits. As a result, Emperors started to hire mercenaries. Mercenaries were looked down upon by the Roman citizens. As a, result, ing there werein even fewer recruits. On another downside, hiring mercenaries cost a lot of money, and they would switch sides if offered enough money. Soon, there wasn’t enough money to pay forthe mercenaries, so the taxes were raised. A problem with taxes was that most Roman citizens did not want to pay them, so Emperors devalued currency, which hurt trade. Many parts of the Empire tried to break away. As a reconsequltence, there were many emperors at the same time, twhato promised money and emptied treasuries to accommodate citizens' needs.
