Adverse childhood experiences are some of the proven causes of poor health conditions of thein victims, as well as their reason for indulgence in health risk behaviors. Neen experienced a traumatic childhood caused by her mother’s behavior. The disorganized attachment theory best describes her childhood, whereby, despite going through the harm and pain in her mother’s care, she admits that she could not leave. According to the theory developed by Hutchison (2018), children in such scenarios try their best to achieve a sense of security from their parents, who, on the other handin contrast, are less concerned about the bond (2018). The relationship between Neen and her mother is a reflection of disorganized attachment theory.
Neen was desperate for her mother’s love, and she is seen moving back in with her mother only because she had told her that she loved her. She was continually trying to please her mother, even if it meant engaging in prostitution to help her (mother) get high. Her life story corresponds to the idealtypical life of a person who went through an adverse childhood. She resolved to self-harming behavior, such as prostitution and drug abuse, and was also convicted multiple times. As Neen admits in one of her talks, it was her upbringing that molded the person she had been before her transformation. This implicates the parents as the defaulters when the children end up in drug addiction and other self-destructive behavior.
The theory fails to include the psychological trauma experienced by the children in such relationships with abusive parents (Hutchison, 2018). The trauma they go through leads them to engage in harmful activities. Most of them end up in jail, as seen in the narrations of the inmates who share heartbreaking stories of their childhood.
