Amy tanTan's key point in "Mother Tongue" is that the limitations and having a perfectthat imperfect English can have on you andin today's society. For example, finding jobs, socializing with people and, them not being able to understand and you not being able to understand them as well. Tan elaborates on this idea and her mother's language. I believe her audience is other writers, possibly ones that also come from an immigrant background.
