My leadership journey started in 2009, when I joined the U.L.K Legal Aid Clinic. The Clinic was established in 2007 by the Faculty of Law with the mission to educate, research and service toserve the community. The following year I have beenwas voted to be the adviser of the Clinic's committee of the Clinic. My role was to advise the committeeprovide counsel and raise awareness ofabout different laws, (succession, land, taxation laws; and matrimonial regime). I choosechose a specific law to teach to thethe citizens. Different cases were brought to the clinic inClinic for need of Legallegal representation some lecturers represent them intoin the court. I often teachtaught about the human rightrights to the citizens in the Gasabo sectors. During that time I also published different booklets answering legal questions raised by the citizens and explaining laws they misunderstood. This movement reached to 10 sectors ofin the Gasabo District, with 2800 citizens outreached.
Duringduring my time at the Primary Court of Nyarugenge before going to the City of Kamembe. Every Friday, we used towould listen to citizens and receive their claims verbally and, guide them onthen indicate them where to go for further legal guidanceassistance. After realising that Many Locals aremany were not legally literate and were therefore unable to draft court submissions which impeded them toand access justice completely., I then convinced my colleagues to assisthelp many locals inby drafting court submissions for freethem without applying any charges. Even though I faced opposition on the move from my chief registrar finally agreed with me onregarding this move, the neccessitynecessity of implementing my initiative was finally agreed upon. It was beyond our tasks, but I trained my workmates on how to draft a court submission; then, we started to draft the court submissionsubmissions for the local’s populationlocals. This initiative allowed hundreds of citizens to access justice effortlessly.
