Comprehending a literary work may be a difficult experience. HistoryThe history of literary criticism provideprovides literary theories that emerged to demonstrate different paths for readers to understand of what kind of elements the work is constituted of and how to interpret the work. While some theories maySome theorists focus on the comprehension of the text by analysing and looking deeply to it’sits internal structure, further, byand excluding the author’s and the reader’s role, which. This can be primarily seen in the works of the theorists of New Criticism and Formalism ( Nwadike and Onunkwo, 2018, p.195), however, one might argue that there are structures that should be acknowledged beyond that framework. Against the structure of New Criticism, in the 20th century, some literary theorists sufficiently evaluated on the importance of interpretations and responses coming from the reader and how it contributes intoto bringing the meaning of the text, which eventually emerged as the ‘Reader-Response Theory’ ( Al-Haba, 2013 p.83). OneTwo of the most important theorists thatwho evaluated onthe Reader-Response theory from diverse theoretical lenses are Wolfgang Iser and Stanley Fish. While they both inscribed their theories by focusing on Reader-Response theory, the theoretical lenses theythrough which they elaborate on differdiffers in numerous ways. In this essay, I will be elaborating on Iser’s and Fish’s approaches on the role of the reader, while underlyingdrawing on the similarities and differences.
