One way Sophocles portrays the idea that our destiny is determined by the decisions we make is by creating a contrast between Kreon and Antigone. In this discussion between Kreon and Antigone, Sophocles has Antigone justify her actions to persuade Kreon into understanding her reasoning for burying the body of her brother, Polyneices,Polyneices's body although Kreon’s law forbade her to do so. Sophocles attempts to convey Antigone’s thinking by referring to how she did not “intend to pay, before the gods” for breaking their laws because of her fear “of one man and his principles” (564). The audience can identifyrealizes that Kreon’s egotistical leadership over Thebes creates tension between the law of the gods and human law. Antigone approaches the conflict with a purposeful tone, highlighting her denial to accept Kreon’s illiberal ways of leading. Sophocles embraces Antigone’s interpretation of how theher actions she decides upon will lead to consequences with either Kreon or the gods. Furthermore, Antigone acknowledges that suffering through the penalty of death, under Kreon’s rule, will be far more feasible than thea punishment ofreceived by the higher power. Instead of understanding Antigone’s perspective, Kreon claims that she should “go down there and love the dead”dead,” emphasizing that “no woman will rule me” (644), to end their conversation. The audience can recognizerecognizes how Antigone’s statements against Kreon’s decisions cause him to retaliate with hostile remarks, as he refuses to confess his wrongdoings. Sophocles emphasizes Kreon’s harsh tone, highlighting how Kreon strikes Antigone’s values of natural law, to defend his own excessive ego. Kreon continues to ignore suggestions, due to the fact that he refuses to continue being challenged by a woman presenting his flawed decision-making.
